The surge in the number of Spaniards to the Hellenic Republic comes following the promotion of less famous travel destinations in this country, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
A report in the Greek City Times notes that the decision to promote the Region of Central Macedonia as a tourist destination for this year during an event held in Madrid resulted in increasing interest of Spanish tourists in Greece.
The event was organized by the Region of Central Macedonia as well as Halkidiki Tourism Organisation and was attended by media representatives, as well as journalists and travel agents and travel agencies among others.
The event was held as part of the Greek Embassy in Madrid with the support of the Hellenic Tourism Organization as well as the Hellenic-Spanish Chamber of Commerce.
Leonidas Tsiandis, responsible for Tourism Planning as well as the Coordination sector of Central Macedonia, said that the region has the highest mountain peaks, stressing that it is a privileged place for activities such as climbing, skiing, hiking and horse riding among others.
According to him, this has helped establish the area as a destination for lifestyle as well as wine tourism.
Tsiandis said that among the most favourite destinations for Spanish tourists is Halkidiki.
At the same time, the Director of the Halkidiki Tourism Office, Giorgos Brutzas, referred to the uniquely beautiful Mediterranean forest, as well as transparent water and the temperatures during the year.
Greece has managed to welcome the most significant number of foreign visitors, even amid the pandemic, which has contributed positively to the country’s economy.
A report in the Greek City Times noted that a total of 2.5 million international tourists visited the Hellenic Republic in the first quarter of this year. The same source showed that air arrivals almost doubled compared to the figures registered before the spread of the Coronavirus in 2019.
In addition, Greek Tourism Minister Vasilis Kikilias said that he expects this tourist season to be even more successful tourist season compared to 2022.
The Minster emphasized the fact that the country experienced the most significant increase in tourism in Europe last year while expressing his hopes that this year’s performance will see an increase from ten per cent to a total of 20 per cent compared to last year.
